Imparali Custom Tailors, New York City

After my last experience with tailoring it was very refreshing to have a new one that was filled with professionalism, courtesy, and best of all excellent results.

Last week I stepped into the modest office of Imparali Custom Tailors on fifth avenue and was zipped through a very efficient pinning of my first Indochino suit. As I was being pinned I noticed that all the alterations are done on premises which is a great thing. I was asked to call back in a week and today was the day.

When I got there I was greeted by a very friendly Matt Harpalani who is continuing the grand tradition of custom clothing and alterations from the founder Bob Harpalani. He called me by my first name, shook my hand, and was generally a pleasure to deal with. I tried on the finished product and it is absolutely wonderful. I asked him if I should take in the pant legs a bit more and he graciously explained exactly why that would be a bad idea.

The rates are fair for the service provided. Sleeves are $20 a piece, jacket $45, hemming is $20, and pants are $25. My Indochino suit is now a beautifully custom crafted peice that slips onto my body like a glove. Expect photos tonight once I get home.

  1. Can’t wait to see those pictures. I have a few suits I’m on the fence about and their expertise could save me some money.

Bring the suits into them and see what they will probably tell you what needs to be done and how much it will cost to tailor them. They’re really good.

How many pieces are you looking to get tailored?

I have a question and hope you can help me. Im going to NYC for Memorial Day weekend. I am thinking of getting a Indochino suit or coat but i rather find someone else to measure me. Would you have any recommendations? Ive prefer to see a tailor at least to get measured but since im only going to be in town for the weekend it might not do.

      Hi Ron,

I definitely recommend you have a reputable tailor measure you. Find someone in your area that does custom clothing and let them know you are ordering from an overseas company. My tailor told me to take all of my measurements down 4 inches because the tailors at Indochino usually give a suit 4 inches of allowance so when you get them they are “baggy”.

Either way, I highly recommend Indochino because of the quality and cut of the of suits. Even if they are a bit off, you can easily get them tailored and they offer a claim sheet where you can get up to $75 back on tailoring costs.

If you are looking for a lightweight wool go for the Navy Suit. It’s extremely lightweight and comfortable.

Also Ron, go see the guys at IMPARALI. They are great. They also make suits (a little higher in price than Indochino). Tell them I sent you.

    All the best,

So all in all for first time custom overseas suit buyers they should go to a reputable tailor correct?

I always feel like I would be offending a tailor by paying them for measurements just to turn around and tell them I’m buying my suit elsewhere. Oh Well, I remember the 4 inch allowance part too.

      Hi Patrick,

You COULD measure yourself but if I had to do it again I would go to a tailor. You also don’t have to tell them you are buying a suit from overseas. And if you really feel guilty about it, rummage through some old suits/clothes. There may be something in your closet worth salvaging with some alterations.

      All the best,

…or you could just explain the situation and promise to come back to them with the suit when it arrives for final alterations?

Now there’s a quick and easy solution.

      Thanks, NCF.
