Loafer Socks
I love going sock less especially with summer suits. It is a highly debated topic as most male fashionistas balk at the thought of sock less with suits but I am a fan of breaking rules within the boundaries of good taste.
Sometimes on an odd day, though, I feel there should be a little extra padding especially with dress loafers. Breaking those bad boys in sock less can leave some painful blisters.
I recalled an article in GQ about Banana Republic Loafer Socks and pick some up yesterday afternoon. They are very comfortable and still give you the Italian look…at least from the ankle up, that is.

Very well spotted. There are similar offerings from Uniqlo and Emporio Armani that would work as well. It’s all about feet comfort
Thanks Barima. I absolutely agree. I have to check out the ones you mentioned as well.
Also, I love your blog.
All the best,
Dennis Cahlo
I am positive BR, Uniqlo, and Emporio Armani make a fantastic product. But, if you are like me – and rather save that sock money for something that might bring a bit more fashion pleasure – give the following two options a try. Though they are not made to be loafer socks” and thus do not have as wide a mouth, I wear them with my loafers all the time and they cannot be seen at all.
(1) Starter “no-show” athletic socks from Wal-Mart. $4 for three.
Can be worn with boat shoes, loafers, vans, etc and give you the barefoot appearance. Unfortunately these are not sold on the website and are usually sold out in the store, so if you find them, buy in bulk.
(2) Adidas “no-show” womens socks (item #357353).
I bought a pack of 6 at Costco for about $10 I think. They have arch compression and are made from an anti-microbial fabric. They aren’t made to be as nondescript as the loafer socks featured, or the Starter ones mentioned above, however because they are made for the smaller female foot, they tend to get the job done on men while staying behind the scenes. They fit my size 11.5 foot fine and only slip off my heal with a certain canvas boat shoe I own, they work fantastic with most of my loafers.
My Preference:
Though the Adidas is of a marginally better quality and better for you conscience if you are opposed to Wal-Mart, I like the Starter sock. They are similar in proportion to the BR sock and have been my primary sock for the past 3 years. Of course, they have become increasingly difficult to find which is why I am now trying out the Adidas sock.
One thing to note is that these are athletic socks, thus they are not as subdued and do not look as elegant or simple as the BR sock pictured above. The Adidas is all Black or White with three white stripes across the ball of the foot and a tiny logo at the top o the ankle. The Starter is either White or Black with a gray band that goes across the top of the foot.
Sorry for such an extremely long write up, you have no idea how bored I am today. Actually, you must have an idea – I just wrote 5 paragraphs about socks!
LOL! Thanks Amir! I’m so glad you gave my readers some budget options. I do like the BR socks because they are so incredibly comfortable. I will have to try out the Adidas versions, tho!
All the best,
Dennis Cahlo
I picked up some all black no-show socks from TJ Max or one of those stores like it for about $10. They work well. I was planning to get the BR socks. I wish they had them in a dark brown.
I wish there was a TJ Max around here. Good find!
All the best,
Dennis Cahlo
UPDATE
They sell them at H&M now. You get a two pack (in either white or black) for under $6. They are true loafer socks (as opposed to simple no-shows).
I bought a pack and wore them today. No slippage whatsoever. Definitely a bargain.
Hey Amir,
This is EXCELLENT news! Thanks so much!
All the best,
Dennis
Johnston and Murphy shoe stores sell great no show socks for loafers/dress shoes. I have bought several pairs there. They work great and are like the BR ones. I think they also sell them on their website.
