Investing In A Tuxedo

Gentlemen it is time to buy a tux. Ever since I saw the Indochino line I realized I should invest in one. I have always rented and the tuxes have been too large or too…blech (that is a word of my own invention. It means awful). For some reason a lot of places think that one shoulder size too large makes a trim man look awesome. Not so.

Now, before you tell me that you definitely will never have use for a tuxedo, I guarantee it is something you will appreciate in your wardrobe. Even if you do not need it immediately for only $299 you can own a beautiful classic tux via Indochino and through August 30th, you can get the shirt, cuff links, and bow tie for free (enter promo code TUXEDO at checkout). Seeing as though you may only use it once or twice a year, you should have it for a very long time and will be very happy you do when that last minute wedding or formal event happens. Plus you’ll look better than those guys in the baggy rented numbers…blech. Just make sure you go for something that will never go out of style.

My own tuxedo came from Indochino on Friday and spent the weekend getting hemmed up. This time, the measurements I used gave me a perfect result and there was no tailoring necessary at all for the jacket or pants. Construction on the Classic Tuxedo is FLAWLESS. I have never felt classier taking a photo of myself. Now all I need is a few black tie events to go to this year. It’s either that or get married (ladies I am recently single, will sing you songs, love to shop, and will buy you flowers and present them to you in my new outfit pictured below).

Menswear Cinema: Quadrophenia

In the late 90′s (1996-1999) there was quite a large Mod revival here in New York City. One of the many haunts I regularly danced to obscure soul albums was BAR 13 at a party called SHOUT. I think this is where my obsession with menswear began because we all took dressing like the Mods of the 60′s very seriously. I never quite got it as close as my peers. Some of these guys went all out. I was poor and stuck finding thrown together clothing at Salvation Army’s and Goodwills and the occasional “higher end” 99x pieces. That look, ironically, was adopted by The Strokes and their followers. Not to say I started the look but I damn well was one of the first.

I digress. At SHOUT they routinely played movies whilst we danced the night away. One of my favorites was QUADROPHINIA. I bought my own copy on VHS (I still own it) and watched it so much I nearly snapped the tape. QUADROPHENIA is an excellent coming of age film with great clothing and an amazing sound track.

Trends and times may change but I still find myself drawn to the Mod look. There’s something about skinny suits that make a guy look great. And although I do not wear them as skin tight as I used to, I sure as hell still tell my tailorĀ  to “Go a little tighter on the sleeves, please.”

Menswear Cinema: Alfie (2004)

The 2004 remake of the classic Brit film ALFIE is more style and less substance than it’s predecessor. If you are a menswear aficionado, though, that is not necessarily a bad thing…especially if viewed whilst MUTED.

The Cotton Suit Takes A Photo

I hate photos of myself; specifically ones with my face in them, so it takes a lot of convincing before I get behind a camera.

Photographer and friend Howard Goldberg needed a guy in a suit against an urban backdrop and he was very charming and eased my mind about the whole thing so on a particularly warm evening we went down the block from my apartment to take some shots. I chose my RICE cotton suit, Indochino cottonĀ  custom french cuff shirt, Indochino cufflinks, pocket square, and Beatle Boots. Below is a picture from the session that I could actually live with. It’s a bit quirky and shows off the outfit nicely. Also, I think this can give you guys an idea of how I dress everyday!
