Stretch Your $$ Series–Home Essential Tips that also Save You Money (By Kevin Finke and Rob Stalder)

TIP #2: Purchase an in-home soda maker and make your own sparkling water and sodas.  It’ll keep you in the green, both $$-wise and with regard to the planet.

If you’re anything like us, you love the fizz.  We especially love sparkling water and drink it fairly exclusively.  There’s just nothing better.  But, like you, we found ourselves caught between a rock and a hard place with our love of carbonated beverages and the desire to be a green crusader, doing our part to help save the planet.  We recycled our cans and bottles, but that didn’t seem like enough.

Then a friend introduced us to SodaStream (www.sodastream.com).  SodaStream offers a range of soda making products as well as flavor mixes for in-home use. For pennies a day (19 – 21¢ per liter), you can make your own sodas and flavored or unflavored sparkling water.  Their pricing is very reasonable, but the soda maker will pay for itself in a short time anyway (depending on how much carbonated beverage you consume).  SodaStream also has a number of starter kits/value packs that include the soda maker, gas cans/carbonators and reusable beverage bottles.  You literally wouldn’t have to purchase carbonated beverages again, which means no more cans or plastic–at least for carbonated beverages.

Moreover, the soda makers are stylish, coming in a number of designs and colors that will work with any kitchen/bar décor.  And replacing the used gas cans/carbonators is super easy.  You just pack them into the pre-paid return box and either call for a pickup or drop it off at one of SodaStream’s retailers (locate one near you via their website).  How easy is that?

But, wait!  There’s more.  The SodaStream soda makers use no electricity for operation and their soda mixes contain 2/3 less calories and sugar than national soft drink brands.  So buy one and save your money, your body AND the planet!

Memories Of A Pocket Watch

It is very common to look at an object and be brought back to the time of it’s acquisition. The piece I am about to showcase does just that.

This past winter my ex and I visited Chicago for the holidays. There cocooned in her bed whilst a heater warmed the room, we lay quietly in the company of a long haired cat between us purring. It was a wonderfully perfect morning where we had nothing to do but surf the web on our computers and sip coffee.

At this time my obsession with pocket watches had grown to a feverish pitch and I remember her being good enough to put up with my constant “What about this one? What about this one? What about this one?” questions. I finally found an Igraham Biltmore watch which was one of the “dollar watches” of the ’20′s/30′s. It is really cheaply made but still ticks and will always bring me back to that wonderful time we spent in Chicago during the holidays.

In the end, having good memories and recollection of  better times are always the best things to look back on.

Thankfully, I will always have something to remind me of them.

Summer Watch On A Budget

While the construction on my Timex Diver is definitely not a Rolex I love it as my knock around watch.

I get it wet, drop it, lay it out on the sand whilst sunning and all the while I don’t have a care in the world because it cost me about $20. This one goes great with jeans and a t-shirt, khakis, and even a navy suit.

The Formal Watch

Sometimes I will make a purchase for the future and a great example of this is my vintage Gruen timepiece.

I found it on Ebay for $40 and fell in love with it. At the time I considered it a special piece only to be taken out on certain occasions. Now that I own my tuxedo my Gruen has finally found a proper companion in my wardrobe.

A Watch My Parents Gave Me

One of the most personal and masculine gifts to give your son is a watch.

On my birthday in April my parents gave to me one of the most beautiful watches I own. Although it is not an automatic I absolutely love this timepiece and am grateful to have parents who have such great taste.

Target Sunglasses Bargain: Ray Ban Alternatives

At Target yesterday I found some really cheap Ray Ban alternatives for the summer. They are MOSSIMO sunglasses and cost $16.99. They are definitely not as sturdy or high quality as Ray Ban but they are a comfortable and, best of all, affordable alternative. (P.S.: The giant clock behind me is from CB2).
