Menswear Cinema: The Ultimate Pajama Movie

Fall is once again upon us and as the nights get cooler and cooler it’s time to put away those boxers you’ve been wearing to bed and break out some warmer, more heavy duty slumber gear.

And it is with no surprise that the idea for this post was inspired by the classic Hitchcock thriller “Rear Window” which I caught on TCM Friday night. In terms of menswear this is by far the ultimate pajama movie since Jimmy Stewart is wearing them throughout the entire film. My favorite pair has to be the brown/tan he wears during the opening.

Last season I bought my first pair of Brooks Brothers pajamas in light blue and will stand by them as the best off the rack pajamas you can buy. You pay a bit more for these but get a great amount of quality that stands the tests of countless wash and sleep cycles. And I will tell you this: there is nothing like a winter Sunday spent reading the NY Times in bed with a big cup of coffee in your Brookes Brothers pj’s. It’s extremely comforting.

I would like to note that buying from the BB website is really expensive. If you go to the store you can find a much better value.

For theĀ  budget conscious individual, there are many more options that will satiate your needs for way less. The best places to look are Target, JC Penney, and Macys. You can find comparable sets of excellent pajamas at each of these outlets. My advice is to get a set in light blue and one in beige. Go for a size that is comfortable but not tremendous. Most size SMALLS will fit men of the 5’11” 170 lb stature perfectly.

If you’ve never owned a set of proper pajamas I highly recommend that you take the leap this season. They have the ability to transform you from a boxer clad, tank top sporting slob into a crisp, suave gentleman. And if we are presenting ourselves in fine cut suits during the day, why not continue that sartorial tradition in the boudoir as well?
