Patterned shirts with a suit work but it really depends on the pattern itself. You want to keep it simple. I have a Banana Republic gingham shirt that I love wearing with my solid Navy suit (I will share this combo with you in an upcoming post). I also wear lilac stripe and red stripe shirts with my suits. You don’t want to overwhelm the outfit with patterns, though. Best to keep it simple, chic, and sharp.
Hope to see you back in NYC soon. I just read you will be in FLA for the next few months. Too bad, man. I’m having a Beatles Rock Band Halloween party and I totally invited you!
I share everyones sentiments with regards to flashing them pearly whites. I must say that I don’t mind a patterned shirt, etc. I think it’s always an interesting combination when I mix patterns, however I try by all means not to project myself in something that’ll create a dizzying effect to the viewer.
Dennis, what I want to know, you’re wearing a watch with a brown strap, the belt, not clearly visible I suspect is black, and that means your shoes must be black. Isn’t there a clash in that colour combination between watch, belt, shoes..? I mean I have a problem with my gold wedding band and silver watch, the two just don’t go.
You are correct that it would clash. If, however, you were wearing brown shoes, brown belt it would totally work and pop with the black and gray combo.
Looks great. Question, I have a light gray suit almost the same color and I have been thinking about wearing it recently but I thought it was too light colored for fall/winter. Any advice on wearing lighter suits in the winter. Normally I only wear it in the spring/summer.
Re: Smile. There you go buddy! Adds a more approachable, & a “Hey, I look good and I feel good” look. Great Job! Is that a Glenn Plaid suit?
Also, I’m curious. What’s your take on patterned shirts with a suit?
Jonas,
Your theory DEFINITELY worked! I will be flashing the pearls a little more often on this blog.
That is a Glenn Check Plaid from Indochino. Here is a link to the suit:

Woah! This looks awesome. The dark coat with the light suit is such an awesome combination. You sure do know how to wear a suit. Kudos!
Jonathan!
I’m so glad to see you posting.
And thank you for your Kudos.

OK, talk soon!

The smile makes all the difference. It makes your look much more confident.
Great outfit.
Thanks Patrick!!!
I’ll definitely be smiling a lot more.
All the best,
Dennis

I swear I need a pair of Von Zippers for summer. I’m notinto shades BUT Von Zippers look made to measure for me.

Hey Dave,
I’m not really to strict on not wearing light gray in Fall. I feel like khaki or white would look out of place but not these light gray ones.
Then again, I am really not a fan of “the rules” at all. I say, if you look great in it and it will keep you warm enough, go for it.
Best,
Dennis
