What $150 Can Buy You

Sometimes we all need a break from the people and places we love. If ever reunited, we sometimes realize just why our hearts grew a little fonder.

My love affair with H&M had waned shortly after the summer for no particular reason but yesterday whilst visiting my nephew on the Upper East Side I needed to duck into said repository to purchase a sweater as I was a tad under dressed for the cold day.

In between the racks I was greatly surprised to find a three piece suit (all sold as separates) that included a really fantastic double breasted waistcoat. One perk is that it will need no tailoring at all. Is it great quality? Not really. I’ve owned way better suits. In fact, I will probably take in to Imparali for a full on button replacement.

But you know what? $150 can look damn good if you want it to:

  1. What shoes you got on or would you recommend Dennis..? I always say to anyone that’ll listen that I am the King od Bargains. I just love how such stunning piece can be serendipitously put together.

    Great find man.

    • M.,

      Thanks!!!

I forgot to get a shot of the footwear, sorry. I am wearing BEATLE BOOTS (Chelsea Boots) that I found at Daffy’s. The Brand is Via Spiga and the model name is Harry.

      My best,
      Dennis

  2. Oh please believe it, I need me some boots for next autumn/ winter. Impressive, the suit is very unconventional, it’s only right that the footwear follows suit.

    • Yeah, with any kind of Paul Smith/Carnaby Street style suit like this I totally recommend a Chelsea Boot. It just looks great.

Man! That suit look great on you! H&M suits never fit me very well though, because I always think the jacket is too short. How tall are you?

    November 2, 2009
    • Thanks Edward!!! This isn’t technically in their “suit” section. This was one of those suiting separate numbers.

      Anyway, I am 5’10″ at 168lbs/170lbs.

Hope that helps and good luck!!

Ah, at 6’2″ and 175 pounds the jacket would probably be short on myself, haha. It’s tough to find OTR suit jackets.

But I buy the pants separately because they fit perfectly.

  4. You’re a tall one. You should go with custom all the way.

Kenneth Cole makes great OTR for a man of your stature. Try them out. You’ll still get in under the $500 range.

    Best,
    Dennis

Would that be Kenneth Cole Reaction or New York or just Kenneth Cole?

      November 2, 2009
      • Hrm…Not really sure on that one. Do you live in NY? I just helped a tall friend of mine shop for a suit for a party and we went to the Kenneth Cole on 42nd Street near Grand Central. The suit was a 42R and it fit him well (he’s about your size). Imparali finished it all off for him.

  5. For what it’s worth, I’m the same height as Edward and have no problem with jacket skirt lengths at H&M and Zara, although I only own the one for now

Dennis, thanks for satisfying my curiosity as to how the completed suit looks. It works very well and you have the look in hand

Also, the David Bowie clip below made my day. Speaking of music, I’ll revert regarding your album when I have my own computer back

    • Barima,

So great to hear from you again. I really can’t wait for you to hear my album! It’s very mellow and kind of sad but I find comfort and beauty in melancholic music. The next album is going to be more rock and roll.

Bowie is the king. I’m really into his thin white duke “vest” period and have been pulling a lot of inspiration from those styles for my fall/winter looks this year.

      Wishing you well!

  6. Just a thought. Great find, but button all the vest buttons on the DB and see if you can fix the trousers for braces or tailor to fit without a belt. That glimpse of buckle… You will (and do) wear it well.

(thanks for the album, that’s awfully generous!)

    • Thanks for the sound advice!

I knew that damn button would come back to haunt me. OK, so in the usual H&M fashion, I got home and realized there was a button MISSING and I was so psyched and eager to share the suit with you guys I just put it on and snapped a photo. Afterwards, I used one of the “extra” buttons provided to replace the missing one. Why I didn’t shoot another photo with the fix I can only attribute to me being lazy.

The trouser ideas are great although I do not mind sporting a belt with my suits.

I really do hope you enjoy my album!!

      Have a great one,
      Dennis

  7. Double breasted vest huh, that takes panache to pull off right. And you sir have earned it. FYI, I thought you left the last button on the vest unbuttoned intentionally.

    • Thank you so much, David!

Totally unintentional with that button. I like the way this one looks with all the buttons done up for some reason. It’s very Edwardian.

      All the best,
      D.
