Year In Review: Best Menswear Pocket Guide
Part of my journey this year in menswear was collecting some books on the subject that made for great reference tools as well as excellent sources for styling tips. While they do fall into the “rules” quite a bit, I find that having one with me at all times in invaluable. Most of the books out there are very large and cannot easily fit into an every day attache, gym, or messenger bag. After some research I happened upon A Well-Dressed Gentleman’s Pocket Guide by Oscar Lenius. While not extremely rich in imagery it is an excellent source for on the go menswear reference. Even if you go shopping or to your tailor once in a while, this is a great book to have with you.
You can buy it here.

Good to know… I’ll probably pick that one up in a week. I’ve been a “tee shirt + jeans” guy for a long time and now that I’ll be getting married in about 11 months, my outlook on my wardrobe is quickly doing a 180. I’ve been reading up on your site and Paul Beirne at http://www.mansion.com. You guys have inspired me to go out and get an Indochino suit (classic navy two-piece) and two shirts (free of course with their pre-Christmas promo). I’ve been doing research on indochino.com, suitopia.com, and tailor4less.com. When I stumbled upon your blog and saw that you’ve posted measuring tips, indochino.com became my first choice. This will be my first custom tailored suit and only my second true suit (first one being from Men’s Warehouse several years back… way back). Sorry my first post is so long. Thanks for the many tips and advice on your site.
Rufino,
It’s so great to see you taking the leap from “t-shirt + jeans” to well dressed gentleman. I have no issues with tee shirts and jeans as they are my preferred weekend wear but for the week I love to dress to the nines. Everyday is an occasion to look your best.
I am so happy you are doing your own research and have found inspiration through Made To Measure and Manshion. Here is a great little story for you:
Manshion was the blog that made me want to start writing about menswear. Paul Bernie and I have become somewhat acquainted online and his blog is one of the best references for menswear on a budget. He really stays true to the mantra that “it doesn’t have to cost a million for you to look it.” Also, his tweets are HILARIOUS. You should subscribe to them if you are on Twitter.
Best of luck on your journey. I have a feeling you are going to come out ahead.
All the best,
Dennis
Dennis,
Thanks for the reply. Both Manshion and Made to Measure have pushed me to think that maybe I should start a little blog to document my journey and to help out others who may have had the same questions I did when I started.
I’ve been doing research for the past three months or so on anything and everything about menswear. I’ve recently been trying to get some family and friends to step it up with me… I’ve gotten some great responses, but I might have to be the front runner for this round. I’m not on Twitter, but will be soon to keep up with you and Paul.
I can’t wait for my new Indochino suit to arrive. I’m hoping the measurement tips work out the first time. I’ve still yet to go out and find a custom tailor whom I would be comfortable with. More researching to do, but well worth the right tailor.
Cheers!
Rufino
Rufino,
Please let me know once you have that blog going!! I will gladly share it with my readers.
All the best,
Dennis
This is probably the best thing to wake up to ever! Thanks for the props, guys! I think the men’s fashion tip/inspiration scene is looking pretty damn good these days. With the big guys out there and some personal blogs like ours, it’s a good time to find a practical/affordable way to step up your wardrobe and not feel like a tool. Always a plus, hahaha.
Definitely don’t be shy about using Indochino’s alteration credits. Once you get all the measurements perfected, there’s nothing better than knowing all you have to do is make a few clicks and you’ll have a perfect suit shipped to you in about a week.
I should also add that Manshion was where I originally found about INDOCHINO as well.
Best to you both,
Dennis
Last month i recived my suit buyed in http://www.tailor4less.com it has really nice and easy service, and the price was excelent!
